As he does in Krapp's Last Tape Beckett proves that we live inside of time. Flashbacks or flash-forwards are unnecessary when confronted with time directly. These ancient empty streets, populated with ghosts lead upstairs through hallways to a past that can only recall an inevitable impending death that the character played by Buster Keaton seems to be on the cusp of.
